We aren’t always aware of the little things that foster our experiences.
Unless you are really looking for it, you are likely unaware of how your mood and reaction is being manipulated by powerful, but hidden, artistic elements in the shows and films that you watch.
Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.
~Victor Hugo
How often have you paid attention to your mood while watching television or film? It’s likely you haven’t fully noticed the musical composition under the story line and dialogue as it dictates EXACTLY what you should be feeling.
The same scene can be drastically transformed by the choices of music behind it. What might initially be written as thrilling or frightening, can shift to paradoxical and light with a faster beat, a few chord changes and a different instrument.
Now THAT is power.
It’s no surprise that music can MOVE US. It’s a multi-layered art form, after all. What we’ll be talking about on TODAY’s show is the manner in which it quantifies the cognitive ramifications of our personal MOODS.
Whoever creates the music, has the ability to change the way you think and place you in a certain frame of mind. What may seem like simple melodic compounds are actually more tactical than you might recognize. Hollywood’s musical composers are perhaps the true “subliminal” geniuses behind the success of the most popular TV shows and films.
Music can feel organic and unstructured.
But do not be fooled. It is very STRATEGIC.
On Today’s Show
I am thrilled to welcome composer Tree Adams to the show today! As a talented and successful music composer, Tree has one of those unrecognized jobs in the industry whom we have to thank for our “moods” while being entertained. His music is all around you. It’s in your local juke joint, on your radio, tv screen, that movie you just saw……you probably don’t even realize how much of an effect Tree already has on your life. =) =)
Today’s Guest
Welcome Tree Adams!
Tree Adams is an award-winning film, TV and game composer, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist. He is also a prolific songwriter, music producer and a third generation musician.
As soon as he was old enough to walk over to the piano, Tree’s grandmother, a classical pianist, began providing his musical education. Not long afterward he learned to play flute and clarinet. His grandfather, co-founder of the Vanguard record label, played a fundamental role in his life and musical interests, and Tree was deeply influenced by time spent at his grandfather’s label and studios.
Tree studied music at The New School and Bard College and eventually graduated from The University of Pennsylvania. In addition to being an accomplished musician, Tree is a songwriter. He has always written lyrics and loved fiction and poetry.
In the 1990’s, Tree founded the band THE HATTERS. The group spent a decade touring roughly 300 days a year and released three albums on Atlantic Records along the way. Tree not only honed his chops as a touring artist, he learned the music business inside and out.
After moving from New York to Los Angeles, Tree began working in film and television on projects. From his Emmy®-nominated work on the theme for CANTERBURY’S LAW and award-winning projects like PERCEPTION and CALIFORNICATION, from thrillers like RUN, MOB RULES and HARD LUCK to dramas including LEGENDS, THE 100 and REDEMPTION ROAD, Tree continues to work across the gamut of media and music genres.
In addition to his immense musical aptitudes, Tree is exceptionally gifted at collaborating with other writers, and enjoys working with filmmakers to tell their stories through music. Learn More—>
